About Sorbus decora (Sarg.) C.K.Schneid.
Sorbus decora (Sarg.) C.K.Schneid. grows 4โ10 metres (13โ33 ft) tall. Its leaves are odd-pinnately compound, with 11โ17 leaflets. Each leaflet measures 5โ10 cm (2โ4 in) in length and 1โ2.5 cm (3โ8โ1 in) in width. All parts of the plant range from hairless to slightly hairy. Flowers are produced in panicles 6โ25 cm (2+1โ4โ9+3โ4 in) across, holding anywhere from 125 to more than 400 individual flowers. Each flower is 5โ7.5 mm across, with five white petals 2.5โ3.5 mm (3โ32โ1โ8 in) long, 14โ20 stamens, and carpels with 3โ4 styles. The fruits, which are pomes, are bright red to orange-red and 4โ7 mm (5โ32โ9โ32 in) across. Sorbus decora grows throughout the Laurentian Mixed Forest Province, the New England-Acadian forest region, eastern Canadian boreal forests, and Greenland. It does not occur north of 62ยฐ15โฒN, which restricts it to the southern tip of Greenland, where it is generally found further inland in western fjords such as Qinngua Valley. It is often cultivated as an ornamental plant, valued for its cold hardiness, attractive flowers, and large clusters of small red berry-like pomes. Its fruits are an important food source for wildlife, especially birds during winter and early spring.
