About Solidago chapmanii A.Gray
Solidago odora, commonly known as sweet goldenrod, anise-scented goldenrod, or fragrant goldenrod, is a North American goldenrod species belonging to the Asteraceae family. This plant is native to the United States and Mexico. It occurs in every coastal state from Veracruz north to New Hampshire, and ranges inland as far as Ohio, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Its flowering season runs from July through October. It can be found growing in habitats including live oak woodlands, loblolly pine-sweetgum stands, and slash pine savannas. Two subspecies are recognized: Solidago odora subsp. odora, which is found across most of the species' total range, and Solidago odora subsp. chapmanii (Gray) Semple, which occurs only in Florida and southern Georgia. As a traditional medicinal plant, Solidago odora has a range of ethnobotanical uses, particularly by the Cherokee people. When crushed, its leaves give off a licorice scent, and they can be used to make tea.
