Solidago californica Nutt. is a rhizomatous perennial herb. It grows a hairy stem that can reach up to 1.5 meters, or 5 feet, in height. Its leaves are lance-shaped; the leaves near the base of the plant can grow up to 14 centimeters, or 5 and a half inches, long, while leaves further up the stem are smaller. The inflorescence is a narrow, often one-sided cluster or series of many individual flower heads. Each flower head holds many yellow disc florets, and is surrounded by up to 11 narrow yellow ray florets that measure up to 5 millimeters, or one quarter of an inch, long.
