Solanum commersonii Dunal ex Poir. is a wild potato species that belongs to the Solanaceae plant family. It is native to southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, and has been introduced to the island of Mauritius. This species is a crop wild relative of the cultivated potato, and it is useful for potato breeding. Its valuable traits for breeding include resistance to root knot nematode, soft rot, blackleg, bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, verticillium wilt, Potato virus X, tobacco etch virus, common scab, and late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans, as well as natural frost tolerance and the ability to cold acclimate.
