About Smerinthus planus Walker, 1856
Smerinthus planus, commonly known as the Oriental eyed hawkmoth, is a moth species belonging to the family Sphingidae. This species was first described by Francis Walker in 1856. Its distribution ranges from northern Xinjiang, across northern China, Mongolia, and southeastern Siberia, to the Russian Far East and Japan. From there, its range extends south through Korea and Taiwan to Hainan, Yunnan, and eastern Tibet. The wingspan of adult moths measures between 70 and 100 mm. In western China, there are likely two generations of the moth per year. Further east in China, the number of annual generations ranges from one to four, depending on latitude and local weather conditions. Adult moths are in flight between the months of April and September. The larvae of this species feed on plants from the Populus and Salix genera.
