About Smallanthus uvedalia (L.) Mack. ex Small
This species is commonly called hairy leafcup, with the current accepted scientific name Smallanthus uvedalia (L.) Mack. ex Small; it was formerly classified as Polymnia uvedalia (Linnaeus) Linnaeus. Mature plants grow between 0.6 and 3.0 meters (2 feet 0 inches to 9 feet 10 inches) tall. The stem is stout, and is generally smooth on sections below the inflorescence branches. Its opposite leaves form a small cup shape around the stem, which gives the species its common name leafcup. Each flowering head holds 7 to 13 yellow ray flowers on the outer edge, each ray flower measuring 1 to 2 centimeters (3⁄8–3⁄4 inches) long. The interior of each head holds around 40 to 80 yellow, tube-shaped disc flowers. A single large individual plant can produce around one hundred flowering heads. The entire plant gives off a resinous odor.
