About Sixalix atropurpurea (L.) Greuter & Burdet
This species was formerly known as Scabiosa atropurpurea, and has cauline leaves that are pinnately dissected. Plants produce flowers in shades from red to purple. It is native to southern Europe. It reproduces by seed, and its seeds are dispersed by animals. For cultivation, it prefers cooler climates; high temperatures and humidity negatively affect its growth. It grows best in rich, alkaline, well-drained soils that are high in organic matter. It is valued as a good cut flower. The cultivar Sixalix atropurpurea 'Beaujolais Bonnets' (formerly Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Beaujolais Bonnets') is grown for its long blooming period and burgundy flowers.
