It was first described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775, with the official scientific name (Denis & Schiffermüller) 1775. This moth is native to Europe; the first recorded specimen found in the United States was reported in 2002. The wingspan of Sitochroa palealis ranges from 26 to 34 mm. The adult moth flies between June and July, with the exact flight period varying based on location.
