About Sisyrinchium montanum Greene

Sisyrinchium montanum Greene is a herbaceous perennial clump-forming plant, growing between 10 and 50 cm (4 and 20 inches) tall. Its stems bear wings with margins that range from smooth and entire to finely toothed. Both the leaves and stem are slender, reaching up to 3 mm (1⁄8 inch) broad, and are colored green or brownish, with sharp edges and a fine pointed tip. Flowers grow in small cymes that hold 2 to 5 flowers together, emerging from a spathe. Each flower is around 2 cm (3⁄4 inch) in diameter, with six purplish tepals that have a yellowish base, and yellow stamens. The fruit is a capsule 4.5–6 mm (0.18–0.24 in) long, which contains numerous small black seeds.
