Sisyrinchium elmeri Greene is a rhizomatous perennial herb that grows in a clumpy form. Its narrow stems reach between 20 and 30 centimeters in height. The plant is medium green, nonwaxy, and dries to a dark green or brownish color, never turning black. It has flat, narrow leaves that resemble grass. Its flowers have six tepals, each roughly one centimeter long. The tepals range in color from yellow to yellow-orange, marked with dark brown veining. The plant produces fruit as a dark brown capsule.
