Sisyrinchium californicum (Ker Gawl.) Dryand. is a rhizomatous perennial herb. It produces a pale green, non-waxy stem that can reach around 60 centimeters in height. Its foliage turns dark brown or black when it dries. The plant bears flat, narrow, grasslike leaves. Each of its flowers has six tepals, which measure between 1 and 2 centimeters long. Tepals range in color from light to bright yellow, and often display brown veining. Its fruit is a dark-colored capsule.
