About Silene oregana S.Watson
Silene oregana S.Watson is a species of flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family, with common names Oregon silene, Oregon campion, and Oregon catchfly. It is native to the western United States, including the Great Basin, where it grows in habitats such as sagebrush and forests. It is a perennial herb that grows from a woody caudex and taproot, producing an upright, mostly unbranched stem that can reach 70 centimeters in height. The leaves are lance-shaped: they grow up to 8 centimeters long around the caudex, and are shorter when found higher up on the stem. Flowers grow in a terminal cyme, and sometimes also grow in leaf axils. Each flower is enclosed within a hairy, glandular calyx made of fused sepals. It has five petals that are creamy white or pink-tinged, and each petal tip has four to six long, fringelike lobes.
