About Sigaus piliferus Hutton, 1898

Sigaus piliferus, first described by Hutton in 1898, is a species of short-horned grasshopper that belongs to the family Acrididae. This grasshopper is endemic to New Zealand, where it is only found in alpine and sub-alpine habitats of the North Island. The species has two distinct ecotypes. The northern shrubland ecotype has relatively long legs, while the southern ecotype is found in alpine areas. These two ecotypes were likely isolated from one another during the last glacial maximum, and now come into contact in the central volcanic region of New Zealand's North Island.
