The scientific name of this species is Setaria distans (Trin.) Veldkamp. Setaria distans is a flowering plant species belonging to the grass family Poaceae. One of its synonyms is Paspalidium distans. It is native to New Caledonia, New Guinea, most of Australia, and the Bonin Islands (also called Ogasawara-shoto). Carl Bernhard von Trinius first described this species in 1829, under the name Panicum distans.
