About Serruria linearis Knight
Serruria linearis, commonly known as the needle-leaf spiderhead, is a flowering shrub that belongs to the genus Serruria and is a component of the fynbos biome. This species is endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, where its natural range extends from Mamre to Dassenberg. It is an upright shrub that grows to a height of 80 cm, and produces flowers from August to November each year. After a fire, new growth sprouts again from the plant's existing roots. Two months after flowering finishes, the fruit drops from the plant, and ants disperse the plant's seeds by storing them in their nests. Serruria linearis is unisexual, and pollination of its flowers is carried out by insects. It grows in sandy habitat at elevations between 120 and 190 meters above sea level.
