About Serruria kraussii Meisn.
Serruria kraussii, commonly known as the snowball spiderhead, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This plant is endemic to South Africa's Western Cape, where it grows in the Hottentots-Hollandberge mountain range, spanning from Jonkershoek to Helderberg. It is an upright shrub that grows up to 1.0 metre in height, and produces flowers from July to November. Serruria kraussii dies after wildfires, but its seeds are able to survive the burn. Two months after the plant finishes flowering, its fruit falls to the ground, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. The species is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in granite and sandstone soils at elevations between 180 and 460 metres.
