About Serruria decumbens (Thunb.) R.Br.
Serruria decumbens, commonly known as the peninsula spiderhead, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This species is endemic to the Western Cape, where it occurs on the Cape Peninsula, ranging from Kommetjie to Gifkommetjie. The shrub has a spreading, flat growth form and reaches up to 1.0 m in height. It flowers from July to October. Wildfire will kill the mature plant, but its seeds survive the fire. Two months after flowering completes, the fruit drops, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. Serruria decumbens is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in sandstone soil in rocky habitats, at altitudes between 150 and 310 m.
