About Senecio blochmaniae Greene

Senecio blochmaniae Greene is an uncommon species of flowering plant in the aster family, with the common names dune ragwort and Blochman's ragwort. It is endemic to the Central Coast of California, and is only found along the immediate coastline of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. It grows in sand dunes and sandy areas on coastal floodplains. It is a subshrub that grows several arching stems, often exceeding one meter in height, from a thick taproot. Its stems are covered in many thick, linear-shaped leaves that can reach up to 12 centimeters long. The lower leaves of the plant dry out and curl up. The flower heads are lined by approximately 13 green-tipped phyllaries. Each flower head holds many yellow disc florets, and usually has 8 narrow yellow ray florets that are about one centimeter long.
