About Selenicereus undatus (Haw.) D.R.Hunt
Selenicereus undatus, commonly called white-fleshed pitahaya, is a species in the genus Selenicereus (formerly classified under Hylocereus) of the cactus family Cactaceae. It is the most widely cultivated species in its genus. It is grown both as an ornamental vine and as a fruit crop, producing the fruit known as pitahaya or dragon fruit. Like all species in the Selenicereus genus, it originated in the Americas. S. undatus is native to the region ranging from Mexico to Honduras, and it may be a hybrid species. Selenicereus undatus is either lithophytic or hemiepiphytic. It is widely cultivated across tropical regions, and is commonly distributed there as a result of cultivation. It is a sprawling or vining cactus that can grow as a terrestrial or epiphytic plant. It climbs using aerial roots, and can reach heights of 10 meters (33 feet) or taller when growing on rocks or trees.
