About Sedum smallii (Britton) Ahles
Sedum smallii (Britton) Ahles, also known by the synonym Diamorpha smallii, is a plant species in the family Crassulaceae. It goes by the common names elf orpine and Small's stonecrop. When it was classified as Diamorpha smallii, it was treated as the only species in the genus Diamorpha. This species is endemic to the southeastern United States. Sedum smallii becomes active in late fall and winter, blooms in late March, and then dies. It produces red succulent leaves that function to reflect light and store water. It grows primarily on solution pools, which are shallow basins on rocky outcrops that hold seasonal pools. Most populations of the plant are located in Georgia, but populations have also been recorded in Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. It is listed as an endangered species by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
