About Searsia tomentosa (L.) F.A.Barkley

Searsia tomentosa has the English common name real wild currant, the Zulu common name umhlakoti, and the Afrikaans common name korentebos. This plant is a small, bushy, evergreen tree. It is native to South Africa, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe. In South Africa, it grows in fynbos and coastal shrub, and is naturally most common along forest margins. Its sprays of small greenish flowers produce an unpleasant odor that attracts flies. Despite this scent, it is considered an attractive shrub, and it is grown in botanical gardens internationally for its multi-coloured foliage.
