About Searsia pentheri (Zahlbr.) Moffett
Searsia pentheri (Zahlbr.) Moffett, which is called common crowberry in English, gewone kraaibessie in Afrikaans, iNhlokoshiyane in Zulu, and mutasiri in Venda, is a species of tree that belongs to the genus Searsia. It is a frost-hardy tree that can reach a maximum height of 6 metres. The tree is primarily evergreen, but it will lose its leaves during severe winters. It grows olive-green foliage and has dark brown bark, and can be cultivated in either full sun or partial shade. It produces small flowers, after which it develops large quantities of small, shiny, light brown edible fruits. These fruits are a food source for birds, and only female trees of this species produce fruit. This tree grows naturally across large areas of South Africa, and it has also been planted in Spain.
