About Searsia pendulina (Jacq.) Moffett
Searsia pendulina is a medium semi-deciduous tree that typically grows multiple trunks, with strong, fast growth. This species is wind and drought resistant, and can also tolerate excess water. It has soft green very fine leaves, and grows an overall pleasing, slightly drooping habit that is somewhat similar to a weeping willow. It can reach a maximum height of 10 metres, but usually grows 6 to 8 metres tall, with a spread of around 5 metres. This species is protected in the Northern Cape. In summer, it produces sprays of inconspicuous flowers that attract insects. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees; female trees bear bunches of small, round edible fruits in late summer, which are mostly eaten by birds. This tree is widely used as a pavement and garden tree across South Africa. It propagates easily, grows quickly, and flourishes in full sun. It is not invasive, and makes an excellent shade tree that also effectively attracts birds and insects. While it has a non-aggressive root system, its fast growth means it should not be planted very close to paving, swimming pools, pipes, or walls. It is also not suited for planting close to buildings, nor for parking underneath, because it produces a very fine powder that can cause staining.
