About Scutiger pes-caprae (Pers.) Bondartsev & Singer
Scutiger pes-caprae (Pers.) Bondartsev & Singer has a brownish cap that is 6โ20 centimetres (2+1โ2โ8 inches) wide. The cap typically has a convex kidney shape, is sometimes lobed, and becomes flatter as the fungus ages. It has 1โ2 whitish pores per millimetre, which may discolor to pink or greenish. Its usually decurrent tubes grow up to 5 mm long. The stem measures 2.5โ8 cm (1โ3+1โ4 inches) long and 1โ4 cm (1โ2โ1+1โ2 inches) thick; it is usually larger at the base, where multiple individual mushrooms may grow conjoined together. The flesh is 5โ20 millimetres (1โ4โ3โ4 inches) thick, whitish, and slowly turns pinkish when bruised. It has a mild taste, and produces a whitish spore print. This fungus is found in western North America, growing under conifers and on rotting wood from August to February. It is somewhat more common in the southern part of this range than Albatrellus ellisii. According to reports, the caps of young European specimens of this species are edible after thorough cooking, but have a chewy texture.
