About Scorzonera humilis L.
This species, known scientifically as Scorzonera humilis L., differs from Tragopogon pratensis (goat's-beard) by having short, pale green bracts; T. pratensis has long, pointed bracts. Individuals of this species grow between 7 and 50 cm in height. Its leaves are unbranched and elliptical-lanceolate in shape. Its flower heads are 2.5 cm wide and deep yellow. It flowers from May through July. Its achenes are smooth and ribbed, beakless, and have a pappus similar to that of Tragopogon pratensis. Its stem exudes a milky juice when cut or broken.
