Shelley's francolin, with the scientific name Scleroptila shelleyi (first described by Ogilvie-Grant in 1890), is a bird species that belongs to the family Phasianidae. This species is named after Sir Edward Shelley, who is the cousin of George Ernest Shelley. The International Ornithological Congress version 15.1 recognizes three subspecies of this bird: Scleroptila shelleyi uluensis, Scleroptila shelleyi macarthuri, and Scleroptila shelleyi shelleyi. In terms of distribution and habitat, Shelley's francolin occurs in grassy woodlands and grasslands across Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Eswatini, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
