About Scleria ciliata Michx.
Scleria ciliata Michx. grows to a height between 20 and 70 cm, or 8 and 28 inches. Its culms are erect, grow in tufts, and may be either glabrous or hairy. Its leaves emerge from purplish sheaths, and have linear blades that range from 1 to 7 mm, or 0.04 to 0.28 inches, wide. Its inflorescences are terminal and axillary, arranged in clusters that range from few to many, and measure 5 to 10 mm, or 0.2 to 0.4 inches, across. This species blooms from May to August, and produces achenes that range in color from white to brown. Within North America, Scleria ciliata is found in the southeastern United States, where its range extends from Virginia south to Florida, and west to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. It grows in soils ranging from wet to dry, in habitats including pinelands and thickets.
