About Scirpus microcarpus J.Presl & C.Presl
Scirpus microcarpus J.Presl & C.Presl is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family. Its common names are panicled bulrush, smallfruit bulrush, and barberpole bulrush. It is native to North America, occurring across the northern and western regions of the continent: its range extends from Alaska through Canada to the northeastern United States, covers most of the central and western U.S. states, and also includes Baja California. It grows in many types of moist and wet habitats. This plant is a perennial herb that grows from a long rhizome system. Its erect, three-angled stems often grow taller than one meter. Sheathing leaves grow both at the base of the stems and higher up along the stems. The inflorescence is a panicle made up of many clusters of spikelets and leaflike bracts that sit on long, thin branches. The fruit of the plant is a pale, smooth achene that is less than 2 millimeters long.
