The stem of Schoenus nitens is cylindrical, with a width ranging from 0.5 to 1 mm. This species is most often found in seasonally moist habitats, growing near beaches or coastal brackish water. It can occasionally be found inland, growing in swampy, wet areas near lakes. The species' specific epithet nitens comes from Latin, where it means 'shiny'.
