About Schleichera oleosa (Lour.) Oken
Schleichera is a monotypic genus of plants in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae, containing only one species: Schleichera oleosa (Lour.) Oken, a tree species found across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This species is native to the Andaman Islands, Assam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Java, Laos, the Lesser Sunda Islands, the Maluku Islands, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Sulawesi, Thailand, and Vietnam. It grows naturally from the foothills of the Himalayas and the western Deccan Plateau, east to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and is also found in Bihar, and central and southern parts of India. This tree occurs sporadically, and is rarely found in large dense groups, in dry mixed deciduous forests. It grows in well-drained rocky, gravelly, or loamy, slightly acidic soil. While it is occasionally found in swampy locations, it usually grows on relatively dry soil at low altitudes, and can also be found growing at elevations between 900 and 1200 meters. It requires an annual rainfall between 750 and 2800 mm, and tolerates an ambient temperature range of 35 to 47.5 °C.
