About Schizachyrium sanguineum (Retz.) Alston

Schizachyrium sanguineum, commonly called crimson bluestem, is a perennial graminoid species. It is distributed in the United States, Central America, and South America. In the United States, this species grows in two separate, disconnected regions: one region includes the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, while the other includes Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. S. sanguineum inhabits disturbed sandy sites, sandhill systems, and pine flatwoods. This grass can grow up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall, and produces panicles that range in color from white to brown between June and October each year.
