About Schizachne purpurascens (Torr.) Swallen
Schizachne is a genus of plants in the grass family that is native to Eurasia and North America. Only one species in this genus is currently accepted: Schizachne purpurascens, which is commonly known as false melic. Three subspecies of Schizachne purpurascens are officially recognized. Schizachne purpurascens subsp. callosa (Turcz. ex Griseb.) T.Koyama & Kawano is distributed across European and Asiatic Russia, China (Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Jilin, Liaoning, Shanxi, Yunnan), Mongolia, Korea, and Kazakhstan. Schizachne purpurascens subsp. capillipes (Kom.) Tzvelev is found in Kamchatka. Schizachne purpurascens subsp. purpurascens grows in Canada (all 10 provinces, plus Yukon and the Northwest Territories), and the United States (Alaska, Rocky Mountain States, Great Lakes Region, and the Northeast). Melica smithii was previously classified within the genus Schizachne under the name Schizachne smithii.
