About Scarites buparius (Forster, 1771)
Scarites buparius reaches a body length of approximately 35โ40 millimetres (1.4โ1.6 inches), with a maximum recorded length of 60 millimetres (2.4 inches). This glossy beetle has a basic black body color that acts as an aposematic trait, making its body stand out clearly against sandy substrates. The elytra bear thin, shallow striae that are almost completely absent on larger specimens. Sexual dimorphism is not prominent in this species. However, males are usually slightly smaller than females, and males have longer, hooked mandibles. This species is flightless. It can be found in France, Greece, Italy, Spain, and North Africa. Scarites buparius inhabits coastal dunes and sandy beaches.
