About Saxifraga hyperborea R.Br.
Saxifraga hyperborea, commonly known as pygmy saxifrage, is a species of flowering plant. It is native to Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Russia, Spitsbergen, and mountainous regions of the western United States. There is an unconfirmed historical report of this species growing on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. This plant grows in wet tundra, along snow banks, stream banks, and lakeshores, at elevations reaching up to 3000 meters. In various botanical publications, populations of this species found in the United States have previously been classified under the names Saxifraga debilis or Saxifraga rivularis. Saxifraga hyperborea is a small, mat-forming herb that can sometimes appear purple, and it has a woody caudex. Its flowers may be either purple or white, and grow up to 5 millimeters across.
