About Saxifraga callosa Sm.
Saxifraga callosa Sm., commonly known as limestone saxifrage, is a flowering plant species in the Saxifragaceae family. It is native to maritime alpine habitats in Western Europe, specifically Italy, France, and Spain. This species is a clump-forming evergreen perennial, growing up to 50 cm (20 inches) tall and 100 cm (39 inches) wide. It produces rosettes of narrow grey-green leaves that are coated in lime. In spring, its pure white, star-shaped flowers grow in long panicles. The Latin specific epithet callosa translates to "thick-skinned, with calluses".
Saxifraga callosa is cultivated as an ornamental garden plant. It requires well-drained alkaline soil and full sun, so it is often grown in an alpine house where these specialized growing conditions can be maintained. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
