It was described by Scopoli in 1772, and was originally classified under the genus Leptura. It has a wide distribution across Europe. It feeds on Populus tremula. Individuals of S. octopunctata measure between 13 and 18 millimeters, which equals 0.51 to 0.71 inches in length.
