About Sanguisorba officinalis L.
Sanguisorba officinalis L. is a herbaceous perennial plant that reaches up to 1 meter in height. It grows in grasslands and thrives particularly well on grassy banks, and it flowers from June to September. This species is native to most of Europe, most of Asia, and the West Coast of Canada and the United States. It has also been introduced to Finland in Europe and Peru in South America. Its extensive root system is used commercially for erosion control, and it is also used as a bioremediator to reclaim derelict sites such as landfills. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called Di Yu. Per the Chinese Herbal Materia Medica by Dan Bensky, it is described as having properties that cool the blood, stop bleeding, clear heat, and heal wounds. Specifically, its root is used to treat bloody dysentery and nosebleeds, and it is applied topically to treat burns and insect bites.
