About Sambucus australasica (Lindl.) Fritsch
Sambucus australasica (Lindl.) Fritsch is a shrub or small tree that typically reaches a height of 4 m (13 ft). Its stems, leaves, and flowers are all glabrous. The leaves are pinnate, 60โ250 mm (2.4โ9.8 in) long, and borne on a 20โ100 mm (0.79โ3.94 in) long petiole. Each leaf has three or five leaflets, which are narrow elliptic to lance-shaped with the narrower end at the base. Individual leaflets are 20โ100 mm (0.79โ3.94 in) long and 4โ30 mm (0.16โ1.18 in) wide, have coarsely-toothed edges, and grow on a 2โ5 mm (0.079โ0.197 in) long petiolule. The flowers are sweetly scented and arranged in groups with a diameter of 100โ200 mm (3.9โ7.9 in). Each flower has three white petals approximately 3 mm (0.12 in) long. Flowering takes place from October to March, and the fruit is an oval to spherical yellow drupe with a diameter of about 5 mm (0.20 in). This species is widespread in coastal districts of Queensland and New South Wales, and extends inland as far as Rylstone and Tamworth. It is rare in Victoria, where it only grows in the far northeast of the state. It mostly grows in rainforest and along rainforest edges.
