About Salvia melissodora Lag.

Salvia melissodora Lag. is a woody shrub that grows up to 6 feet high and 4 feet wide, with a graceful, upright growth habit. Its ovate leaves measure 1.0 to 1.5 inches across. The upper surface of the leaves is mid-green, while the lower surface has prominent veins that stand out because they are covered in chamois-colored hairs. Partially dried leaves of this plant produce a pleasant fragrance, and the flowers are commonly described as having a grape-like scent. Each short inflorescence holds several whorls of flowers. The flower upper lip is violet-lavender, while the lower lip and the back of the upper lip are pale lavender. The flowers contain abundant nectar, and attract bees, butterflies, other insects, and hummingbirds from late spring until frost.
