About Salvia dominica L.

Salvia dominica, commonly called Dominica sage, has the local common names Maru or Khowwekha in Arabic, and marva in Hebrew. It is a strongly scented perennial shrub that occurs across the eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. This plant grows to roughly 1 meter in both height and width. It blooms in spring or early summer, producing pale yellow and white flowers arranged in delicate whorls along a branched inflorescence. This branched inflorescence is among several Salvia structures thought to have inspired the design of the menorah.
