About Salticus mutabilis Lucas, 1846
Salticus mutabilis Lucas, 1846 displays significant sexual dimorphism and variation in its coloration patterns. This species has a wide distribution across the Mediterranean region and Europe, ranging from the Macaronesian islands in the west to the Caucasus in the east. It occurs across most of Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, and Sicily; historical records note that it replaces the closely related Salticus scenicus in Sicily. Salticus mutabilis is also found in North Africa and Turkey, and was introduced to Argentina, where it was first documented in the 19th century. It is commonly encountered in a wide range of European habitats, and behaves similarly to Salticus scenicus in regions where both species co-occur.
