About Saltator fuliginosus (Daudin, 1800)
The black-throated grosbeak, with the scientific name Saltator fuliginosus (Daudin, 1800), is a seed-eating passerine bird that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. This species occurs in humid Atlantic Forest habitats in specific South American locations: far northeastern Argentina (Misiones), eastern and southeastern Brazil, and far eastern Paraguay. The bird is overall a very dark grey. Males have distinct black coloring on the face, throat, and chest. For adult birds of both sexes, the bill is red, though this red color can fade when the bird is kept in captivity. Juvenile black-throated grosbeaks have a yellowish-dusky bill instead. This species looks very similar to the slate-colored grosbeak, which can be distinguished by its white throat.
