About Salix retusa L.

Salix retusa L. reaches a height of 10 to 30 centimetres (3.9 to 11.8 inches). It most often grows with creeping stems, and only rarely grows with erect stems. Its leaves are dull green, shaped obovate, lanceolate, or elliptic, with smooth entire margins. Leaves typically measure around 2 centimeters long by 1 centimeter wide, and grow on very short petioles. Like all willow species, Salix retusa is dioecious. Its catkins are broadly cylindrical, and bear yellow anthers. Its flowering period runs from June to July. This species occurs in mountain ranges across central and southern Europe, including the Pyrenees and the mountains of Bulgaria. It grows in rock crevices and on screes, at elevations between 2,000 and 2,700 metres (6,600 and 8,900 feet) above sea level.
