About Salix bonplandiana Kunth
Salix bonplandiana Kunth, commonly called Bonpland willow, is known by multiple Spanish common names including ahuejote, sauce, ahujote, and huejote. It is a perennial willow tree species. Its native range covers southern and southwestern Mexico, extending into central Guatemala. In western Mexico, it grows in the Sierra Madre Occidental cordillera, and can also be found in smaller scattered locations such as Baja California Sur, northern Sonora, and San Luis Potosi. A separate core disjunct population grows in favorable sites in central and southeastern Arizona, particularly at higher elevations near water. Across Mexico, the species is associated with the Pacific Coast. In southern Mexico, its range reaches into inland mountain areas of the Pacific region and central-southwestern Guatemala. It occurs across the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in southern Mexico, and its range extends along the Pacific west of the western edge of the Volcanic Belt, then north into the Sierra Madre Occidental cordillera. Within the cordillera, the northern end of its continuous range is in southwestern Chihuahua. A large disjunct section of the species' range is located in central Arizona, covering the Mogollon Rim and Arizona's White Mountains, extending southeast into the Madrean Sky Islands. This disjunct range also includes isolated mountain-associated sites in the bootheel region of extreme southwestern New Mexico.
