About Salacca zalacca (Gaertn.) Voss
Salacca zalacca, commonly known as salak, is a species of palm with a very short trunk. Its leaves can grow up to 6 meters (20 feet) in total length. Each individual leaf has a 2-meter-long petiole that bears spines up to 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) long, plus numerous leaflets. This palm has been cultivated across Indonesia, with at least 30 existing cultivars. Most cultivars produce fruit that is both sweet and astringent in flavor. Two widely popular cultivars are salak pondoh, which originates from Yogyakarta province and was discovered in the 1980s, and salak Bali, which comes from the island of Bali.
