About Sagittaria graminea Michx.
Sagittaria graminea Michx. is a perennial herb that reaches up to 100 centimetres (39 inches) tall. It bears narrow, grass-like leaves, roughly 20 cm (8 in) long and 2.5 cm (1 in) wide. A very thin flower stalk grows to about 60 cm (24 in) above the water surface. Its flowers measure around 1.5 cm (5⁄8 in) wide, with three petals and three sepals. Typically, upper flowers are male and only produce stamens, while lower flowers are female and only have pistils. Its seeds form in a head roughly 1.5 cm wide. This species is recorded from every Canadian province stretching from Ontario to Newfoundland, every US state from the Great Plains to the Atlantic coast, plus the US states of Colorado, New Mexico, and the island of Cuba. It is recognized as naturalized in Washington state (US) and in Vietnam. It grows in wet habitats including marshes, and the banks of rivers and lakes.
