About Saga hellenica Kaltenbach, 1967

Saga hellenica is a large species of bush cricket, also called katydid, that belongs to the family Tettigoniidae. This species is endemic to the Balkans. Its current distribution includes Albania, North Macedonia, and Greece excluding Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; it was previously also found in western Bulgaria. It inhabits open stony terrains and light xerophytic forests, where it occurs on shrubs, and more rarely lives in grass. Saga hellenica feeds on other large insects, including other Orthoptera species such as crickets and grasshoppers. While it is locally common across most of its range, it faces threats from agricultural activities and seasonal fires set by farmers and arsonists.
