About Sadleria cyatheoides Kaulf.

Sadleria cyatheoides Kaulf., commonly known as ʻamaʻu, resembles a small tree fern. It reaches a height of 0.9–1.5 m (3–5 ft) and a trunk diameter of 7.5–10 cm (3–4 in). Its young fronds are often tinged red to block harmful sunlight. This species is endemic to Hawaii. It can be found growing on lava flows, in open areas, and in wet forests across all of Hawaii’s major islands, up to an altitude of 1,676 m (5,499 ft). The pith and young fronds of Sadleria cyatheoides Kaulf. are edible when roasted or steamed.
