Its widely spaced gills are white, and are either adnexed or free. The cylindrical stipe is white or cream colored. The brittle flesh is light in tone, and has a mild taste. Russula vinosa is distributed across Europe and North America, with confirmed occurrences in Great Britain, Southern Europe, New England, and Fonnoscandia. It typically grows in coniferous tree stands during summer and early autumn.
