About Rumex spinosus L.

Rumex spinosus L., commonly known as lesser jack, typically grows as a sprawling weed. Its leaves have a simple shape, similar to spinach. Male and female flowers grow in separate clusters on the same individual plant. This species produces numerous seeds enclosed in a hard, prickly casing. These seeds develop in two locations: in clusters along the branches, and at the base of the stem. The root of Rumex spinosus L. is thick and succulent. When the plant dies and its root dries out, it pulls the seeds located at the base of the stem into the ground. The spiny, hard-wearing seeds make this plant a nuisance in areas where humans live, similar to the similarly shaped seeds of Tribulus terrestris. Although the root and leaves have a bitter taste, they are edible and can be eaten.
